A terrifying scene unfolded in Baltimore, Maryland on March 26th as the iconic Francis Scott Key Bridge fell victim to a runaway cargo ship collision. The Dali(Cargo ship), having lost power moments before, slammed into a crucial bridge support at high speed. The incident began with a distress call from the Dali, but the vessel continued its course towards the bridge. The forceful impact triggered a fire on the ship, spewing thick black smoke into the air.

Authorities are still piecing together the cause of the power failure. It’s been confirmed that the ship was under the guidance of local pilots at the time. Additionally, a prior inspection raised concerns about the Dali’s machinery, adding another layer to the investigation.

Tragically, six construction workers performing repairs on the bridge are unaccounted for. Search efforts managed to save two individuals from the water, but the frigid temperatures posed significant challenges in locating the missing crew. Following a search that lasted a whole day, authorities canceled the rescue effort and declared the workers to be dead. It was nearly impossible to survive the frigid, 50-foot-deep water after several hours, and it was too dangerous for divers to navigate the dark water amid sharp debris.

The families of the six victims are mourning their loved ones, whose bodies have not been found after waiting for hours at a Royal Farms convenience store near the entrance of the bridge.

This devastating event has highlighted potential bridge vulnerabilities and reignited discussions about maritime safety regulations. As the investigation unfolds, authorities prioritize finding the missing workers and assessing the impact on infrastructure and transportation.
